Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain

Dr. Timothy Miller evaluates and treats plantar fasciitis and other causes of heel pain in Houston and Spring. His foot and ankle practice includes nonsurgical care for common problems as well as surgery when appropriate.

Recognizing plantar fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue along the sole that helps support the arch. Irritation where it attaches near the heel can cause pain under the foot, especially with the first steps after waking or sitting for a long time.

Long periods of standing, changes in activity, tight calf muscles, and foot shape can contribute. However, heel pain is not always plantar fasciitis. An examination helps distinguish it from tendon problems, nerve irritation, or a stress fracture.

Treatment usually begins without surgery

A treatment plan may include changes in activity, supportive footwear, heel cushioning or orthotics, and a guided stretching or physical therapy program. A night splint may be considered for persistent morning symptoms. The choices depend on your examination and what you have already tried.

A heel spur on an X-ray does not by itself explain pain or mean an operation is needed. Imaging may help evaluate another suspected cause, while MRI is not routinely necessary for a typical presentation.

When symptoms persist

Persistent heel pain deserves reassessment of the diagnosis and treatment plan. Further nonsurgical options or surgery may be discussed in selected cases. Any procedure has risks, including nerve injury or continued pain, and recovery depends on the treatment performed.

For your appointment with Dr. Miller, describe exactly where the pain occurs, when it is worst, and how it affects walking, work, or exercise. Prior imaging can be helpful if available. Your visit can focus on understanding the problem and discussing practical next steps.

Questions patients ask

Why does my heel hurt with the first steps in the morning?

Pain under the heel after sleep or sitting is a common pattern of plantar fasciitis. It does not confirm the diagnosis on its own. Dr. Miller examines the location of pain and considers other causes, including tendon, nerve and bone problems.

Does a heel spur need to be removed to stop the pain?

A spur on an X-ray does not automatically explain heel pain or mean surgery is needed. Treatment focuses on the painful condition identified during the evaluation. Plantar fasciitis can often be managed without removing a spur.

What if stretching and other treatment have not helped?

Persistent symptoms are a reason to reassess the diagnosis and how treatment has been used. Additional imaging is considered when another cause is suspected. Dr. Miller can review further nonsurgical options and whether a procedure is appropriate for your situation.
