Patient summary

A bunion is an alignment problem around the big toe joint, rather than simply an extra growth of bone. Dr. Miller uses a foot model to explain how the bone position creates the familiar prominence at the side of the foot.

Treatment depends on symptoms and the severity of the deformity. Options may include wider shoes and other nonsurgical care, or surgery when pain continues to limit daily activities. Minimally invasive bunion correction uses small incisions for suitable patients; healing, pain, and recovery vary with the procedure and the individual.

So, a bunion is actually a deformity of your foot. A lot of people think that it's an a growth on the side of the big toe but it's actually a deformity where this bone comes out to the side and then the toe falls back inward which makes a prominence on the side of the foot. And so, there are many ways to treat a bunion depending on the severity. The trend nowadays is to have more minimally invasive surgeries and with smaller incisions and quicker recoveries and less pain.
